As a leader, you need new skills and ways to talk about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in your business that are not just about the optics.
You need programs that create real change - from HR to the CEO to the hourly workers.
To generate real change in the climate of your community, you need:
-
Everyone invested in the process of creating and sustaining a DEI program that reduces turnover and produces better professionals.
-
Initiatives that are sustainable and people who are solidly on the team and just as invested in your mission as you are.
-
Everyone to be working toward one singular mission - to lead from a place of inclusivity and to fully access the potential of everyone in the organization.
When we work together to create spaces and places of belonging we build a culture of knowledge in the workplace.
But you already know this.
You know that we find more success by including diverse people and ways of thinking into our business operations and strategies through DEI.
Businesses become more sustainable and employees become more innovative and resilient when they feel respected and respect their leadership in return.
You know that to lead with inclusion at the forefront, you must acknowledge what’s happening in the world today and recognize how the social, economic and racial inequities create even unintentional biases and unequal opportunities.
You know that this is not about saving people from who we or they think they are -
Rather this is about empowering them to always be working to be the best version of themselves and to lift those up around them.
What is DE&I?
DIVERSITY
Diversity is all the ways in which people differ, including the different characteristics that make one individual or group different from another. These differences include identity markers such as race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and more.
EQUITY
Equity is the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. Improving equity involves increasing justice and fairness within the procedures and processes of institutions or systems, as well as in their distribution of resources.
INCLUSION
Inclusion is the intentional act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. An inclusive and welcoming climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions.
Iām Lekeshia Angelique.Ā Army Veteran, Mom, Coach, Taco Aficionado and creator of safe spaces to educate people. The key to change is knowledge and empathy. It is important to me to create a culture of knowledge, as the more knowledgeable we are of one anotherās experiences, the more likely it is that we will take the steps to effect change.Ā Ā
Most often, I have been the only Black woman in powerful meetings. Iāve had to learn not only to have a seat at the table but a voice while there.Ā
Time and again, I saw the need to empower more women in leadership roles and the massive need to fill the gaps in businesses around diversity, equity, and inclusion education.Ā
My mission is to empower not just Black women,Ā but every human to have a powerful voice and an equitable seat at any table they desire to be seated at.
